Young Talent at the Opéra de Lorraine
A recent recital by the Opéra Studio of the Opéra National du Rhin at the Opéra National de Lorraine offered a masterclass in vocal artistry. Patrick Delacour, in his thoughtful critique, observes that these young soloists are shaping the future of the lyrical arts, combining technical mastery with expressive subtlety.
Under the guidance of conductor Sandrine Abello, the program traced the evolution of opera, from baroque arias to Mozart and Gluck, through belcanto and Puccini, culminating in Russian and French repertoire and excerpts from musical theatre. Delacour notes that the recital not only showcased individual talent but also highlighted the ensemble’s cohesion, a key indicator of the rigorous training provided by the Opéra Studio.
Among the standout performances, Romanian-Hungarian baritone Eduard Ferenczi Gurban drew particular attention. Patrick writes, “The second part of the evening, featuring excerpts from La Bohème, allowed audiences to hear Eduard Ferenczi Gurban very much in verve in the aria ‘Rivolgete a lui lo sguardo,’ originally composed by Mozart for Così fan tutte. Supple and warm, his voice displayed clarity and expressive nuance.”
Throughout the recital, Delacour highlights the ensemble’s ability to adapt to a variety of styles, maintaining stylistic integrity and emotional engagement. The final number, a transposed rendition of the concluding measures of Le Nozze di Figaro for eight voices, received enthusiastic applause, underscoring Delacour’s conclusion that the next generation of opera singers is fully prepared to sustain and renew the lyrical tradition.
For Eduard, performances such as this one at the Opéra de Lorraine confirm his growing stature as a rising star in European opera, demonstrating both technical finesse and a naturally compelling stage presence.
