Returning to Figaro in Cluj — A Role Close to the Soul

One year after his debut as Figaro at the Hungarian Opera of Cluj-Napoca, baritone Eduard Ferenczi Gurban returned to Rossini’s celebrated masterpiece Il Barbiere di Siviglia in his hometown — a performance marked not only by artistic growth, but by a deeper personal connection with one of opera’s most iconic characters.

Built around the sparkling wit of Beaumarchais’ famous story, Rossini’s opera follows the adventures of Figaro, the clever barber who navigates intrigue, romance, disguises, and social games with remarkable intelligence and theatrical flair. Constantly moving between humor and emotional subtlety, Figaro remains one of the most vibrant and charismatic figures in the operatic repertoire.

For Eduard, revisiting the role after a year of artistic experiences across European stages became an opportunity to rediscover the character from a more mature and personal perspective.

“This role combines, in a fascinating way, comic spirit, social ease, and vibrant stage energy. Every time I perform it, I discover new dimensions of the character, and it gives me real joy to rebuild him, offering different vocal and interpretative nuances adapted to each scenic context and artistic perspective.”

Returning to Cluj-Napoca carried a special emotional significance for the young baritone. Performing again in the city where his musical path began allowed him to reconnect with a role that reflects many aspects of his own artistic temperament.

“Figaro is a character with whom I resonate deeply, both through temperament and through his vitality and freedom of expression. This closeness allows me to bring him to life through a wide palette of interpretative means: timbral variations, dynamic contrasts, expressive flexibility, and an acting approach carefully built in relation to the other characters.”

Beyond the sparkling comedy and virtuosity of Rossini’s writing, Eduard sought to reveal the inner complexity of the character — the intelligence, spontaneity, and subtle irony that make Figaro far more than a comic figure.

“Beyond the comic dimension and his outward charm, I try to highlight Figaro’s inner side as well: his intelligence, spontaneity, subtle irony, and his ability to dominate dramatically every situation. For me, this role represents not only a vocal and scenic challenge, but also an opportunity to explore the authenticity and complexity of an emblematic character from the operatic repertoire.”

The performance on 7 May 2026 marked another important step in Eduard Ferenczi Gurban’s artistic evolution, reaffirming his strong connection to a role that continues to grow alongside him — both vocally and personally.
