The Opéra national du Rhin continues its remarkable commitment to rediscovering major yet unjustly neglected works of the operatic repertoire with the French premiere of The Miracle of Heliane (Das Wunder der Heliane) by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. Scheduled to run from January 21 to February 1, 2026, this long-awaited production marks a significant cultural event, restoring to the French stage an opera of extraordinary poetic and musical power.
Composed in 1927, The Miracle of Heliane stands as one of Korngold’s most ambitious and sensually charged works. Written by a composer already celebrated as a prodigy and admired by Gustav Mahler, the opera embodies the final, incandescent breath of Viennese late Romanticism. Korngold’s musical language here blends Straussian orchestral opulence with Puccinian lyricism, unfolding in a sound world of lush harmonies, soaring vocal lines, and intense emotional contrasts.
The opera’s dramatic core is built on a powerful philosophical opposition: hatred versus love, tyranny versus inner freedom. Set in a cold, oppressive prison, the story follows a mysterious Stranger condemned to death for having awakened joy and laughter among an oppressed people—acts deemed criminal by a merciless ruler. The tyrant, desperate to be loved by his wife Heliane, offers the Stranger mercy in exchange for his secret. What follows is a spiritual and erotic awakening, as Heliane risks everything—her life, her dignity, her place in the world—for a love that transcends earthly law.
Alban Deags underlines the opera’s mystical dimension, in which love becomes a redemptive force capable of resurrection. The work draws inspiration from medieval mystery plays and fin-de-siècle symbolism, enveloping the listener in a universe where sensuality, faith, and transcendence collide. Voices described as “angelic” seem to emanate from another world, reinforcing the opera’s metaphysical resonance.
Among the central figures shaping the opera’s moral and symbolic tension are the six Judges, embodiments of earthly authority and rigid justice. In this production, Eduard Ferenczi Gurban brings particular presence and vocal authority to his role as one of the Judges, contributing decisively to the oppressive atmosphere that defines the tyrant’s world. His performance reinforces the contrast between institutional severity and the opera’s underlying call for compassion and transcendence, adding depth to the collective portrayal of power confronted by love’s redemptive force.
The new production is entrusted to stage director Jakob Peters-Messer, who reimagines the drama within a dystopian society stripped of humanity. His vision emphasizes the timeless relevance of Korngold’s themes, highlighting how fear, repression, and emotional sterility can dominate societies cut off from compassion and love. Through this lens, The Miracle of Heliane speaks directly to contemporary audiences while preserving its symbolist roots.
The Opéra national du Rhin has already demonstrated its dedication to Korngold’s legacy with the French premiere of Die Tote Stadt (The Dead City) in 2001. With The Miracle of Heliane, the institution deepens its exploration of a composer whose exile to Hollywood in 1936—fleeing Nazism—led him to shape the golden age of film music and influence generations of composers, including John Williams.
This French premiere represents more than a historical correction; it is an artistic revelation. By restoring The Miracle of Heliane to the stage, the Opéra national du Rhin invites audiences to rediscover a luminous, sensual, and profoundly human work—one that affirms Korngold’s place among the great dramatic voices of the twentieth century.
