Exclusive Feature – Baritone Eduard Ferenczi Gurban’s Journey to Music and International Success
Baritone Ferenczi Gurban Eduard shared in an exclusive interview with Evenimentul Zilei the story of his difficult yet passionate journey toward a musical career, one that has taken him from Romania to France. He explained that opera has always been his greatest passion.
A Childhood Surrounded by Music
Eduard grew up in a family of musicians. His mother was a renowned soprano and principal soloist of the Romanian Opera, while his father served as concertmaster of the Hungarian Opera in Cluj-Napoca. From an early age, music was constantly present in his home. He frequently attended his parents’ performances, and the world of opera became deeply ingrained in his identity.
“I cannot imagine life without music. I was passionate from the beginning and wanted to study, hoping that one day I would also stand on stage, in front of the public.”
This atmosphere provided him not only with inspiration but also with his earliest artistic foundation.
The First Steps into Music
Eduard began studying piano at a young age, which offered him a solid basis in music. His participation in national and international competitions, the awards he received, and the dedication he showed became the driving factors for continuing his studies at the Gheorghe Dima Academy of Music in Cluj.
“Talent alone is not enough. Without hard work and consistency, a career in music remains only a dream.”
A Turning Point – The 2021 Mozart Competition
In 2021, Eduard faced a crucial moment. He participated in the International Mozart Singing Competition in Cluj but did not reach the finals. Instead of disappointment, he embraced the outcome with serenity.
Surprisingly, just a week later, he received a message from soprano Elizabeth Vidal, a jury member.
“Her words of appreciation and the trust she placed in me after hearing only an online recording were, for me, the most beautiful prize possible.”
In that message was also an invitation to audition for the Young Artists Program C.A.L.M. (Centre d’Art Lyrique de la Méditerranée), in collaboration with the Nice Opera. This opportunity opened a new world of possibilities and professionalism at the highest level.
A New Life in France
Eduard shared that his acceptance into the program marked a radical change in his life.
“After being selected, I decided to move to France, fully aware that such a professional and well-structured environment would be perfect for my artistic development and would allow me to reach my true vocal potential.”
Sacrifices Made for Music
Eduard also reflected on the sacrifices that came with pursuing his calling. He left behind the comfort of family, his habits, and the security of his home country in order to embrace an uncertain but hopeful path.
When asked about the challenges of his career, he answered:
“The truth is, I cannot answer with certainty… because I have not yet arrived ‘far.’ I am still in the process of building a beautiful career, one that I hope to manage with reason and balance.”
Eduard explained that this profession is as difficult as one perceives it to be.
“If you love what you do and have the ambition to grow, you won’t see it as a burden. Instead, you will live it as a daily challenge: to be better than yesterday, to look in the mirror with honesty, to recognize what must be improved… and then to work toward it.”
