Figaro Returns — A Second Season of Rossini in Cluj
Exactly one year after his acclaimed debut in the role, baritone Eduard Ferenczi Gurban is set to return to the stage of the Hungarian Opera of Cluj-Napoca as Figaro in Gioachino Rossini’s beloved opera buffa, Il Barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) — on 7 May 2026.
Eduard’s debut in the spring of 2025 was met with enthusiastic praise. Music critic Adrian Diaconu described the performance as exceptional, singling out the young baritone for his warm, well-projected voice and his rare ability to embody the youthful cleverness and agility that Beaumarchais originally envisioned for the character. The debut marked a significant milestone — and now, a full season later, Eduard returns to the same stage with renewed artistry.
“With fresh theatrical nuances and refined vocal colors, I am excited to bring new life and new perspectives to my beloved Figaro — a character I feel deeply connected to, both artistically and personally.”
This second-season return is a special occasion: the role of Figaro is one Eduard describes as a natural extension of his own spirit — energetic, resourceful, and versatile. Having lived with the character through his debut year, he steps back into Figaro’s shoes with greater confidence, deeper interpretation, and a richer understanding of everything that makes this role so beloved on the operatic stage.
The production reunites much of the original creative team, with scenic design by Venczel Attila and costumes by Ledenják Andrea, directed by Szabó Emese. This season, the baton passes to Kulcsár Szabolcs, himself making his conducting debut on this production, adding yet another layer of significance to an already memorable evening.
Opera lovers from Cluj and from across Romania are warmly invited to join this special performance — a celebration of artistry, continuity, and the timeless comedy of Rossini at its very best.
