E. W. Korngold’s “Das Wunder der Heliane” – Opéra National du Rhin
The 25/26 season at the Opéra National du Rhin continues with a monumental production: Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Das Wunder der Heliane (The Miracle of Heliane). This production marks a significant milestone in Eduard’s residency with the Opera Studio, as it is his first role on the main stage of the Strasbourg National Opera accompanied by the prestigious Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg.
A Role of Dramatic Responsibility
In this 20th-century masterpiece, Eduard performs the role of the Fifth Judge. While part of a collective, the group of six judges carries a heavy scenic responsibility and profound dramaturgical weight. They represent the voice of a repressive society and the rigid moral order that fears freedom, acting as the ultimate authority over the fates of the protagonists—Heliane and “Der Fremde” (The Stranger).
The Synopsis: A Miracle of Redemption
Set in a joyless kingdom ruled by a tyrannical Master, the story follows a Stranger who brings a glimmer of hope to the people. When he is imprisoned, Heliane, the Master’s wife, visits him and offers an act of pure, redemptive love.
This gesture leads to a high-stakes trial where the six judges must decide Heliane’s moral guilt. Though innocent, she is condemned, leading to a final sacrifice that restores hope to humanity and shatters the old, oppressive order. For Eduard, portraying one of the judges offers a fascinating exploration of the “voice of the majority” and the tension between institutional law and human emotion.
Artistic Milestone
Performing Korngold’s complex and lush orchestration alongside the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg requires immense musical precision. This production highlights Eduard’s versatility as he moves from the wit of Mozart and Rossini to the dense, post-Romantic drama of the early 20th century.
“It is an honor to take this step onto the main stage in Strasbourg in a work so emotionally and musically rich. The role of the judge provides a unique perspective on the dynamics of power and the moral conflict at the heart of this kingdom.”
