Eduard Ferenczi Gurban’s Biography
NATIONALITY – ROMANIAN AND HUNGARIAN
Eduard comes from a family steeped in music, with both his parents being professional musicians. His father is the first violinist at the National Hungarian Opera of Cluj-Napoca, and his mother, a soprano, is a soloist at the Romanian National Opera in the same city.
Eduard’s early education was shaped by his passion for piano and singing. He spent 12 years studying piano at the “Sigismund Toduță” Music High School before being accepted into the “Gheorghe Dima” National Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca. There, he excelled in piano and vocal studies. His dedication and talent earned him an additional scholarship during his studies. As a pianist, he also won several significant prizes, such as 1st Prize at the National Piano Competition “Tinere Talente” in 2013.
Eduard made his operatic debut in June 2021 at the Romanian National Opera of Cluj-Napoca, performing Belcore’s aria from Donizetti’s opera “L’elisir d’amore.” His international career began in 2022 with performances in renowned venues, including the Municipal Theater of Suceava and the State Philharmonic of Târgu-Mureș. He also gave performances at the Nice Opera and participated in prestigious concerts across Europe.
In terms of repertoire, Eduard Ferenczi Gurban explores with great interest a wide range of periods and styles, from Baroque music to contemporary works. He performs major lyrical baritone roles such as Figaro in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia (Hungarian National Opera of Cluj-Napoca), Belcore in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore (Gheorghe Dima National Music Academy), Nardo in Mozart’s La finta giardiniera (Ghoerghe Dima National Music Academy), and Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (Opéra National de Bordeaux). He also interprets character roles with the same artistic rigor, including Dancaïre in Bizet’s Carmen (at Opéra de Marseille, Opéra de Clermont-Ferrand), The Cat and the Comtoise Clock in Ravel’s L’Enfant et les sortilèges (at Opéra de Monte-Carlo) and Ajax 2 in Offenbach’s La Belle Hélène (Opéra de Massy, Opéra de Clermont-Ferrand, Théâtre de Brunoy).
Interested in contemporary creation, he participates in modern productions, such as Laurent Petitgirard’s Guru (at Opera de Nice), where he performed the role of New Disciple 5, and Howard Moody’s Sindbad (at Opera de Nice), in which he sang the title role. These experiences enrich his artistic sensitivity and demonstrate his commitment to staying connected with the challenges of today’s repertoire.

Versatile and dynamic, he is actively involved in the Opera Studio’s projects, including: Dîners sur scène, Bébé chanteurs, Soirée Sondheim, and Carte Blanche Concerts. Eduard will make his comeback in his hometown in 2026, featuring in a second consecutive season as Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Rossini) at the Hungarian National Opera of Cluj-Napoca.
Eager to broaden his artistic horizons, he joined several renowned opera academies: the Academy of the Opéra National de Bordeaux, the Academy of the Opéra de Monte-Carlo (founded by Cecilia Bartoli), and C.A.L.M., an advanced training program linked to the Opéra de Nice.
